Hauteoc caught up with Adventurer Sarosh Georges Jacob on his incredible trip to Los Cabos, in the past Sarosh had shared with us his compelling underwater sea adventures as he encountered one -of-a-kind experiences with unusual species. On this special occasion Sarosh shares with us a video debut of his encounters with sharks – an adrenaline rush unlike any other.

Hauteoc: Hi Sarosh, thank you for sharing your amazing adventures with us! What’s the biggest challenge as a photographer-filmmaker specializing in adventure travel?

Sarosh: The conditions you encounter can be rough at times. Last month, I was in Iceland shooting video and stills of The Silfra Rift. Iceland’s Silfra Rift is a crack in the earth where the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates are tearing apart from each other at about 2cm per year. You actually dive between two continents! The water temperature was 32 degrees so after a while it started to get painfully cold.

Hauteoc: Incredible, must have been quite a challenge. What is the most amazing encounter with nature you’ve had while diving?

Sarosh: That would be the first time I saw a whale shark. I was diving in the Maldives and this massive shark the size of a school bus glided by. I was in awe! One of those moments in life you never forget.

Hauteoc: What recommendations would you make to adventurers traveling to Cabo San Lucas?

Sarosh: I would recommend them to do a lot of scuba diving. The diving you can do out of Cabo, (Socorro Islands etc) is truly world class.

Hauteoc: What has been your most exciting trip while filmmaking?

Sarosh: That’s a tough one. I’ve been on a lot of trips but I’d have to put my dive trip to the Socorro Islands aboard the Solmar V at the top. It was the first time I encountered a bait ball out in the blue like that with all those silky sharks just going nuts! Being in the water filming those sharks was a pure adrenaline rush! The action we saw day after day was like a National Geographic film. Very exciting!

Hauteoc: Thank you so much for sharing all your amazing experiences and underwater encounters! Diving is definitely on our to-do list!

Scuba diving, along with snorkeling, deep-sea fishing, and other water sports, are only a few of the activities that Cabo San Lucas in Baja California, Mexico has to offer to adventure-driven visitors. Of course, those who venture to Cabo, can find the best of both worlds in the romantic getaway that is the Solmar Resort.

An intimate oceanfront location, the Solmar Resort is a unique and luxurious vacation spot in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. Surrounded by granite cliffs, it transforms the resort into a secluded paradise at a convenient 10 minute stroll from the cosmopolitan city of Cabo. Guests can enjoy a private beach and the wonders of its natural surrounding, while maintaining access to city life and other outdoor activites.

Amenities:

This was one of the best vacations I have ever taken. Bali is a beautiful island with so much to offer, from its beautiful geography to its culture and spirituality. The trip routes were well thought out and I was constantly amazed at the wonderful scenery we passed through. In addition, I learned so much about the country itself and its culture through our guides, I felt like I was participating in a Discovery Channel program! A very well-rounded experience, from the great activities (hiking, biking, whitewater rafting, snorkeling) to the great places we stayed, to the amazing sights we saw (volcanoes, waterfalls, forests, rice fields, coast…!), to the great food we ate, to the beautiful setting and weather, to the graciousness of the Balinese people, to the excellence of our guides and to the overall cultural experience. Writing about it makes me want to take the trip all over again!

This was my first Backroads trip and I was blown away. The level of service is incredible. The idea that I can take an active trip but still be pampered is so cool and I feel, as a person of only 23 years, Backroads will definitely be the first place a look when deciding on future trips. After this experience I almost feel it is the ONLY way to travel.

Overall, this is probably the most memorable Backroads trip I’ve taken. Someone has already asked me if I would do it again and without hesitation I can say yes. The blend of activities was perfect, the biking great, the culture immersion was fascinating and the knowledge and experience of our leader and guides made it an extraordinary trip.

Hauteoc Traveler finds indigeneous wonders worldwide…countries, lodges, hotels and resorts that have in their own way made significant efforts to be more environmentally friendly. In fact, green globetrotters can attest to Costa Rica being one of the most greenest countries in the world, finding reprieve in its unique and mystical eco-lodge, Pacuare Jungle Lodge for the Ultimate Rainforest Experience – Costa Rica’s premier eco- lodge is a perfect example of an authentic tropical escape that offers elegant bungalows, exquisite cuisine, outdoor adventures. Getting there is half the adventure, since most guests stay at the Pacuare Lodge as part of a multi-day rafting tour on the Pacuare River, though it can be visited without rafting. That unforgettable river trip takes you through lush jungle and narrow canyons where tropical trees tower over the riverbank and crystalline waterfalls plummet out of the greenery.

As green globetrotters, there are many simple ways in which you can be a more eco-friendly traveler and leave green footprints behind, without ever compromising your trip.

In fact, it might even surprise you, so here are a few simple tips to get you started towards eco-traveling…

Arrive by River-

When visiting The Pacuare Jungle Lodge, you have the option to arrive and/or depart by river. The adventurous guests will begin by prepping for the rafting experience and then embark on the journey that takes over an hour and a half through mesmerizing protected rainforest and views of crystal clear waterfalls that drop onto turquoise waters. A uniquely special experience that makes for a great start on your eco-vacation.

Disconnect Literally-

While traveling turn off cellphones, Ipads, laptops, and other appliances and use only when necessary. During your stay at the Pacuare Jungle Lodge, chances are the only high-tec gadget you’ll need is your camera to capture the stunning natural beauty of the surroundings.

Eat Local-

The Pacuare Lodge’s kitchen staff is made up of young talented people from nearby communities who provide combinations of flavors, local ingredients, and innovative recipes based on Costa Rican roots. Trying local exotic cuisine while traveling is part of the experience, and like some people say, you can learn the culture by tasting the food.

The Pacuare Jungle Lodge located in the heart of Costa Rica’s tropical rainforest is a truly green experience worth the visit. The lodge offers comfortable bungalows and elegant suits in a magical wilderness reserve next to the Pacuare River. The ecological architecture of the place allows visitors to be as close to nature as possible, with the soothing sound of flowing water, birds flying from tree to tree, and a colorful and breathtaking view of the jungle, you can expect to be nothing but relaxed and awed.

Arriving at the Jungle Lodge, is an ecological adventure in itself, since most guests stay at the Pacuare Lodge as part of a multi-day rafting tour on the Pacuare River, though it can be visited without rafting. In addition to rafting, you can enjoy horseback riding, bird watching, canyoning, a rainforest canopy tour, or a trek to a Cabecar Indian community.

Have a Vision Quest for an intriguing way to Inspire your Corporate Team?
Green Meetings

Planning a meeting for a group of no more than 35 people? The Pacuare Lodge is an excellent option, thanks to its isolated, natural setting, attentive staff and the opportunity to enjoy various outdoor activities that can strengthen your team’s espirit de corps. Unlike the sterile meeting rooms of most hotels, the Pacuare Lodge has an open-air meeting hall with a view of the Pacuare River and surrounding rainforest, with birdsong instead of muzak. We offer the basic services needed for a successful meeting – wireless internet, a projector, screen, coffee breaks – and your group will enjoy the meals and exquisite accommodations that make the Pacuare Lodge one of the world’s premier nature lodges.

While the tranquility and isolation – neither television nor telephones – help groups to concentrate on meeting themes and objectives, the Lodge offers a selection of outdoor activities that include white water rafting, hiking, canyoning and a canopy tour to facilitate team building and invigorate participants. And because Aventuras Naturales, the company that owns the Pacuare Lodge, is a leader in corporate social responsibility and environmental sustainability, it is the natural choice for companies and organizations that prioritize people and the environment.

Book the Pacuare Lodge for your next meeting, or retreat and your group will enjoy an unforgettable stay. Collaborate with HAUTEOC’s Visionary Team to Provide you a new platform of incentive ideas, promotions or reward programs for your corporate staff.
At a book signing at Assouline at South Coast Plaza, Hauteoc met Angella Nazarian, author of newly released ”Pioneers of the Possible: Celebrating Visionary Women of the World”(available at www.assouline.com). A compelling book that unravels the biographies of some of the most extraordinary women in history. Hauteoc therefore had the privilege to share with Angella, the inspirations behind her novels and her own discoveries as she travelled the world.

HAUTEOC: Hi Angella, thank you for giving us some time to share your adventures around the world, what would be your most inspirational travel itinerary?

ANGELLA: To me, the most inspirational and transformational trip is one where I see and experience new environments and people. Our family Safari to East Africa was simply magical and the whole family enjoyed it tremendously.

Our first stop was in Nairobi–Kenya. The most beautiful place to stay is in the Giraffe Manor (Tamimi). It is set in 12 acres of private land within 140 acres of indigenous forest. Giraffes roam the place and peer their head into your window and you can feed them.

Next stop was a 3 night stay in a moving tent in the bush. It was set up beautifully with a four poster bed and desk and you are in the heart of the safari. At night you see a million stars shine in the black sky and experience the pulse of nature–you are closest to nature in the area.

Then we took off to Ngorongoro Crater Lodge in Tanzania–often referred to as the 8th wonder of the world. It is perched at the edge of the Ngorongoro Crater and it has spectacular views and service. We got a chance not only view the wildlife but to visit a Massai village and watch them do the jumping dance and see the way the lived. Simply unforgettable.

Last stop was at Bateleur Camp in Masai Mara, the elegant permanent tents and the service remind you of the glamour of vintage Africa or when Hemingway would go on his safaris. We went during the migration season, so you would see thousand upon thousands of zebras, wildebeests, it was the most spectacular sight–especially when you are coming back from a drive and watching the red sun set for the day. This I call the ultimate luxury, to be able to unplug from our daily living and experience something timeless and beautiful.

HAUTEOC: You mentioned before, that Machu Picchu was one of your destinations, what was the most enlightening thing about traveling to Machu Picchu?

ANGELLA: Travelling to Machu Picchu felt very spiritual to me. My first stay was in a beautifully preserved colonial town named Cusco where you adjust to the high altitude of the region. The people and their customs are something to behold. I think our family kept talking about the huge amount of respect that wells up when you really come face to face with people of other cultures. We took a train to Machu Picchu and then a long bus ride toward the mountaintop where you hike through the sacred sites. As the bus climbs up the mountainside, you break through the clouds and see the spectacular ruins. While our guide showed us through the place, I was not only amazed at the advanced way of Incan living, but I also felt an inner sense of calm. Once in a while, I think of those moments and try to bring myself back to that glorious sense of peacefulness that I felt while climbing the mountain in Machu Picchu.

HAUTEOC: What an incredible experience to visit such a place. What have been the most adventurous things you have done on a trip?

ANGELLA: Two adventures come to my mind…While in the Galapagos, I swam in freezing water with sea lions. You think these animals are cute and cuddly, but somehow when you are underwater, they look enormous! They are also very playful, they swim very fast and directly target coming to you. I remember closing my eyes and thinking they are going to crash into me, but they would always stop short. I would feel a wave of water lap against me and open my eyes and see them right next to me staring at me. It almost seemed like they were showing off for me.

The second one was going to Mexico for whale watching–we were on small dingy boats and the whales would poke their head right to the side of the boat and we could pet them. They were massive and at first I was terrified at first. But you would look at them and see this gentleness, and their love for interacting with people. As long as we pet them, they would come back to us and once you stopped, they would go away, with their babies in tow.

HAUTEOC: Those are quite an adventure, swimming with whales and sea lions! Finally Angella, what do you bring home spiritually after a trip?

ANGELLA: This is a quote I have placed on my travel page on my website, it perfectly captures my outlook on the meaning of travel:

“One’s destination is never a place, but a new way of seeing things.” Henry Miller

I think the best part of travel is exposing ourselves to the diversity and vastness of this world and seeing how we have much more in common with other people than we suspect. But travel also affords us the opportunity to see different ways of living and broadening our perspective on life. After a great trip, I feel more connected to the world.

HAUTEOC: Thank you for sharing your inspirations with us Angella! Hearing about your adventures inspire our Hauteoc Travelers to want to travel to these places ourselves!

If you’re feeling inspired after hearing about Angella’s adventures, and want to embark on a mystical journey to the ancient ruins of Machu Picchu, read below for more information on travelling to Peru.

Machu Picchu, site of the ancient Inca city high in the Andes of Peru, is a treasure waiting to be discovered. Peru is one of the great originating centers of ancient culture and on this trip, you’ll discover archaeological treasures, visit ancient ruins, and learn about one of the most mystifying ancient cultures around the world. A highlight of your vacation is a tour to Machu Picchu, often referred to as “The Lost City of the Incas”, where you’ll stand in awe as you witness the ancient ruins surrounded by soaring peaks—one of the most breathtaking views in South America! Also, see the Temple of Sacsayhuaman, which was built in the early 12th century. Some of the stones used to build the fortress weigh more than 350 tons, and the stones were fit so tightly together that a piece of paper will not fit between the stones.
Of course, no trip to Peru is complete without seeing the Nazca Lines. When seen from the air, the lines form precise geometric shapes that number in the hundreds, which include a monkey, whale, hummingbird, shark, spiders, and plants. Archaeologists remain puzzled about why the ancient Nazca people, who thrived here from 200 BC to 500 AD, created illustrations that could only be seen from far above the earth.
