Dolphins are associated with a legendary mystique that inspires thoughts of harmony, gentleness, and transcendence. The sweet mystery of these sea dwellers is that they have long  been believed to possess mystical, healing powers. Superstitious sailors regard a dolphin swimming alongside a ship as a harbinger of good luck. Dolphins appear frequently in Greek mythology as sacred “helpers of humankind,” revered as messengers to the gods, with close ties to Poseidon’s daughters, the Nereids, the goddess of love Aphrodite, and the music-loving sun god, Apollo. Dolphins also serve as poetic inspiration, and have been celebrated by artists as selfless rescuers of humans or transporters of souls of the dead.

For ancient cultures and present day society, dolphins symbolize unconditional love, protection, and benevolence, and we are blessed to enjoy close encounters with these altruistic animals as they migrate to the beach city coastlines of Orange County each year. This time of year I love Dana Point’s seaside charm, for in addition to its beautiful neighboring 5-star resorts, it is enchanting to witness these sea dwelling creatures of great historical significance. He was engaged to the beautiful Annie, with whom he shared a passion for conservative politics and a command of quotes from the movie “This Is Spinal Tap.” He worked as a government-relations official for a California real-estate giant, rubbing elbows with bigwig politicians, driving nice cars, eating fine food. But then his fiancé dumped him days before their wedding, and his boss demoted him. Basically, he had lost everything he lived for in the span of a week.
