Designer Dame Vivienne Westwood, is an English fashion designer and businesswoman, largely responsible for bringing modern punk and new wave fashions into the mainstream. Westwood came to public notice when she made clothes for Malcolm Maclarens boutique in the King’s Road which became famous as “SEX”. It was their ability to synthesise clothing and music that shaped the 1970s UK punk scene, dominated by McLaren’s band, the Sex Pistols. She was deeply inspired by the shock-value of punk – “seeing if one could put a spoke in the system.”

In 2001, Designer Rick Owens joined forces with the Eo Bocci Associati group to internationally develop the Owenscorp company and his production moved to Italy. That same year, Kate Moss posed in one of his leather jackets for an editorial shot by Corinne Day. Later that year Annie Leibovitz photographed Owens and Kembra Pfahler, the designer’s controversial muse, wearing his designs for the Vogue US September issue. He showed his first runway collection in September 2002 during New York Fashion Week. The show was sponsored by American Vogue and Anna Wintour lists him as one of her three “Most Fabulous Recent Discoveries”. Owens’ look has been described as “glamour-meets-grunge”. In 2002, Owens was appointed artistic director at Revillon, the French fur company that was founded in 1723.

In the late 1980s, Designer Issey Miyake began to experiment with new methods of pleating that would allow both flexibility of movement for the wearer as well as ease of care and production. In which the garments are cut and sewn first, then sandwiched between layers of paper and fed into a heat press, where they are pleated. The fabric’s ‘memory’ holds the pleats and when the garments are liberated from their paper cocoon, they are ready-to wear. He did the costume for Ballet Frankfurt with pleats in a piece named “the Loss of Small Detail” William Forsythe and also work on ballet “Garden in the setting”.

At 14, Designer Gareth Pugh began working as a costume designer for the English National Youth Theatre. He started his fashion education at City of Sunderland College and finished his degree in Fashion Design at Central Saint Martins in 2003. He interned with Rick Owens in Paris. His final collection at St. Martins, which used balloons to accentuate models’ joints and limbs (a technique that would become one of his trademarks), attracted the attention of the senior fashion editor of Dazed & Confused magazine, who placed one of his designs on the magazine’s cover shortly thereafter. Pugh was selected to participate in British reality show The Fashion House two months after his graduation, which he would later call “horrible” and his “only other option [to being on] the dole.”
