Modern Master Richard MacDonald’s Heroic Collection Opens For Singapore’s Grand Prix Formula One
In Combination: The Opera Gallery Singapore presents two exhibitions: ‘Timeless Masterpieces’ and Richard MacDonald ‘Magical Energies’ September 21 – October 21, 2012
Like Singapore, everything about world-renowned artist Richard MacDonald’s art is dynamic, inspired, and timeless. For the first time ever, Singapore’s Grand Prix, Formula One’s premiere racing event opens alongside ten pieces of Richard MacDonald’s Heroic Collection. The term “Heroic” is derived from a romantic term from art history denotes “larger than life size” scale: the connotations of extraordinary achievement, risks and fears overcome, and challenges won are still appropriate. The vibrant sculptures will line the chic Orchard Road (Singapore’s equivalent to New York’s Fifth Avenue), nestled between prominent luxury landmarks like the St. Regis, Wisma Atria, and Ion Orchard, in the very heart of this international city.
Singapore’s elite Grand Prix Formula race inhabits this Garden City, one of the world’s most prosperous, as it effortlessly combines modern affluence and a tropical climate, with a vibrant nightlife scene.
At the same time, on September 21st, another first for this sophisticated city, the Opera Gallery Singapore will present Richard MacDonald’s ‘Magical Energies’ exhibition alongside Opera Gallery’s ‘Timeless Masterpieces’ exhibition, an exceptional art collection from some of the most distinguished artists of the 20th century.
In combination, this prestigious Formula racing event and the prominent exhibition is a cultural coupe for the city- with virtually every hotel at maximum capacity for this one-of-a kind intersection of art, entertainment, and stylish competition.
Known for working exclusively with live models, MacDonald’s fascination with the human form and with mankind’s broad emotional range has inspired him to create dynamic, sensitive works that are infused with a quality that withstands the passage of time. As the artist behind the creation of monumental sculptures for the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta, and the 100th U.S. Open in 2000, Richard MacDonald is the first and only artist to have been given exclusive behind-the-scenes access to the famous Cirque du Soleil.
Drawing inspiration from the brilliant spectacle of Cirque du Soleil performers, Richard MacDonald has encapsulated the performer’s beauty, athleticism and spirit in his creations.
“The most important aspect of my work is capturing the soul and life of the human spirit,” said Richard MacDonald. “Through my art work, I hope to increase the appreciation and understanding of figurative sculpture throughout Singapore and the rest of Asia.”
MacDonald’s ‘Heroic’ works mark the sculptor’s greatest legacy. MacDonald has drawn inspiration from signature works in his collection to create sculptures on a larger scale: each Heroic creation represents the investment of five to ten years of the sculptor’s life. It is the ideas that he feels most passionate about that he brings to this culmination—the grandest expression possible, designed to bring an imposing reality to his best-loved themes.
Together with Richard MacDonald’s works, Opera Gallery will also be presenting Timeless Masterpieces, a collection of some of the rarest works by the most treasured artists in the 20th century. Art lovers can also expect unrestricted access to art pieces such as Botero’s famous paintings and his iconic sculptures, Picasso’s most intimate figurative encounters, and Renoir’s romantic brushed people-scapes, to name a few.
